We wrapped up our month on Creativity with a wildcard session that blended reflections on past themes with fresh examples of innovation, risk, and the tension between structure and flexibility.

Constraints spark creativity: Sarah recalled earlier conversations on how limits and resourcefulness—whether in communities or daily life—can actually fuel innovation.

Nonprofits & creative freedom: Chris noted that nonprofits often stifle themselves by trying to mimic business models, rather than embracing unconventional, lower-cost creative solutions that serve their communities.

Innovation vs. structure: Sarah Ross described the challenge of balancing accountability to formal processes with the freedom to “just try things.” We explored the difficulty of running pilots in risk-averse organizations. Staff worry about job security, and leadership often delays by over-planning. Trust in the organization—and clear communication—are key to making pilots work.

Shifting the problem: Dan highlighted how projects can lose focus when teams redefine the problem midstream. Staying scoped on the real problem is essential.

Communication & translation: Sarah Ross emphasized the need for effective (not just frequent) communication when trying new things. Dan underscored how visuals, storytelling, and “corporate code-switching” help translate creative ideas across silos.

Creativity in organizations often collides with the need for structure and risk management. Our conversation today reinforced that pilots, trust, and effective communication can bridge that gap—allowing ideas to be tested, refined, and eventually scaled.
