Week 2 – Personal Creativity
This week we explored personal creativity—what fuels it, how we express it, and why it matters at every age and stage. We even ran out of time because we had so much to share on the topic! Just a handful of conversation threads below…
-
Creativity as being yourself: Inspired by Judy, the “pancake lady” from Galesburg, we saw how authentic quirks, humor, and passion can become a creative signature.
-
Curiosity over perfection: Dan emphasized that creativity is less about doing it “right” and more about trying things, having fun, and keeping curiosity alive—whether in hobbies, work, or parenting.
-
Aging & hobbies: We reflected on how creative outlets can sustain us later in life, with stories of mosaic-making grandmothers, musical parents, and the danger of losing curiosity to isolation.
-
Community spaces matter: From music halls to local arts fairs, creativity flourishes in environments that invite participation, conversation, and experimentation.
-
Courage & vulnerability: Creativity can feel risky—it exposes imperfection. We named the importance of creating safe, supportive conditions so people feel free to try.
-
Practice vs. theory: Sarah shared a yoga teaching—90% is practice, 10% theory—reminding us that creativity grows through doing, not just talking about it. Creativity isn’t about mastering a method—it’s about expression, practice, and courage.
