Week 1 – Creativity – Curiosity Brainstorm
We opened our new Creativity theme with an energizing, story-rich discussion—spanning kitchen experiments to community art—and kept circling back to how the right conditions make creative work possible.
Some ideas that emerged…
-
Constraints spark invention: Wayne’s gluten-free cooking story reminded us that limits can ignite creativity rather than stifle it.
-
Art vs. Design vs. Creativity: Anthena’s frame—art provokes, design responds, creativity is what you can do with what you have—gave us a shared language.
-
Mutual aid & resourcefulness: Sarah and Brea highlighted community ingenuity (using what’s on hand, helping each other) as real-world creativity.
-
Psychological safety matters: Creativity thrives where ideas aren’t judged too fast, “yes/and” is the reflex, and early, messy thoughts are welcomed.
-
Permission to explore: We named the need to proceed without immediate proof of success—and also the permission to stop an experiment without penalty.
-
Curiosity as a practice: Asking lots of questions (and seeing others do it) normalizes exploration, reduces conflict, and builds shared understanding.
-
Beware “out-of-the-box thinker” bias: If we want creativity at work, design the environment and process—don’t rely on a unicorn hire.
-
Invitation & witnessing: From chalk murals to maker spaces, simple invitations and “being creative together” can unlock participation and momentum.
