Week 2 – Courage that comes naturally…or not

  • Week 2 – Courage that comes naturally…or not

This week we turned our attention to personal courage – what it looks like, where it shows up, and how it evolves over time. Our conversation wove together humor, honesty, and deep humanity. Here’s some ideas that popped up.

    • Everyday courage: Some acts of courage feel like they come naturally – Wayne’s karaoke confidence and advocacy against bullying, Sarah’s outspoken allyship and bold personal style, Caralee’s fearless learning, Dan’s leap into new professional worlds, and Chris’s ability to name the elephant in the corporate board room.

    • Where courage falters: Many named vulnerability in public affection, social situations, or public speaking – showing how courage often depends on context, not character.

    • Rooted in values: Courage, we found, is deeply personal – rooted in upbringing, identity, and experience. Sarah linked her advocacy to a childhood steeped in service and activism; Dan described learning to find his public voice after years of self-protection as an immigrant.

    • Collective resistance: We connected personal courage to systemic action – from Sarah’s frustration with health systems “complying in advance” to Chris and Dan’s reflections on showing up at protests and using privilege to amplify others’ voices.

    • Joy as resistance: Wayne offered a resonant close—holding up a David Bowie unicorn painting and naming happiness itself as protest: “Right now, me being gay and finding happiness in life is my own act of courage.”

Courage can look like protest, parenting, posting, or karaoke. No matter the medium, it always involves showing up for what matters, even when it’s uncomfortable.
