Week 4 – Wild Card
Friday was our WILD CARD and we chatted the full hour about performance evaluations – the systems we use to value people in the workplace. Needless to say, most of us aren’t fans of the traditional approach and are eager to explore new frameworks.
- Promotional Assessment Framework. Chris is working on the development of a system to cultivate professional growth and reimagine performance evaluation as way to center people’s goals and support their advancement in ways that honor their strengths and ambitions. Short story – it’s hard to shift organizational culture to this new mindset!
- Clarity is important. People want to know what to expect when it comes to how they are evaluated and compensated. But it’s folly to think we can design an objective system that follows an exact algorithm. Communicating clearly about process is where we can focus our energy to build trust and understanding with our teams.
- The questions missing from our evaluations speak volumes. Hilda weighed in that we’re missing the mark by not asking staff about happiness. Being genuinely curious about what drives a persons happiness is smart business, and can inform better organizational decision making.
- Connection is king. Corporate America has turned our leaders into task rabbits who struggle to find time for the most important work of leadership – fostering relationships and coaching our teams. How much more effective might we be if we committed even 10% more of our time to that endeavor?
