Week 1 – Curiosity Brainstorm on VALUE
Our exploration started out with conventional notions of vale and eventualy got pretty deep! We explored what we value in society as a whole that drives culture and the economy…neglecting the values that many of us hold dearest and are essential to the soul!
- How we demonstrate our value: Sarah licked us off thinking about how we demonstrate our value to others. Chris shared that often, the key is to know what others value and use our knowledge and expertise to deliver them value. So to show our value, we have to satisfy what others value.
- Sarah agreed and shared how one of their grant makers spoke about what mattered to them in the work, not just the work Open Door would do. It was a perfect example!
- Storytelling as a Key Communication Mechanism: Dan highlighted storytelling as a powerful tool to convey value and connect with others on a deeper level. We agreed that storytelling is more impactful than data alone in influencing decision-makers.
- Dan also shared a couple diagrams that make the case for psychological frameworks that broaden what we value in a business context.
- Cultural and Societal Values: We explored the emphasis in society on capital gain, achievement, technological innovation and asked where the satisfaction of the human spirit comes in!
- Long-term vs. Short-term Solutions: Participants expressed concerns about the tendency to prioritize immediate solutions over long-term, sustainable ones, particularly in areas like health and education.
