Week 3 – Structures and ideas that underlie great Communication
Chris walked us through some examples of communication structures – there are many more, but these are a great place to start noodling!
- Hero’s Journey. Also known as the monomyth, the hero’s journey is a common template for stories that involve a hero who goes on an adventure, is victorious in a decisive crisis, and returns home changed or transformed. Think Lord of the Rings or Star Wars.
- Jokes. Most comedy follows a structure that supports the intended outcome – laughs. A typical joke moves from set up, to exposition, to punchline, to reaction, to an act out. It’s purposeful and predictable – both qualities that underly strong communication.
- 7-Part Narrative. Chris developed this framework to help people craft shot, dynamic presentations that engage others and support focused discussion toward solution. Add in a delivery that leans into empathy, vulnerability, and emotion and you have an extremely effective communication tool!
