Week 2 – Curiosity Brainstorm!
After some commiserating and mutual support post-election, we dove into a curiosity brainstorm. Communication is such a juicy topic! We barely scratched the surface – but some themes emerged.
- Trust is a fundamental ingredient for effective communication. We explored how it can be wielded in multiple ways. Shared trust between people greases the tracks for smoother communication. Conversely, convincing people NOT to trust others (a tool of xenophobia) has proven apowerful communication strategy.
- Preference is an inherent factor in communication. We all have preferences (or at least, ways we are adapted to doing things) – brevity vs prolixity, written vs spoken, micro vs macro, and so on. How we manage all these seemingly conflicting styles is part of the art of great communication.
- Consistency fosters a sense of safety. When people know what to expect, anxiety diminishes, and resiliency for change (often what we’re trying to communicate) increases.
- Frameworks that support prescribed modalities and strategies for communication can decrease the chaos of information that we each encounter daily. A strong framework speaks to all the elements above – trust, preference, consistency.
