Week 2 – A Few Principles and Techniques for Listening
We had a small but delightful turnout! Chris shared some ideas to get our conversation started:
- Disclosing information about oneself activates the areas of the brain related to pleasure and releases dopamine. > It’s valuable to listen to others!
- Think about when you know someone isn’t listening to you. What are they doing? How does it make you feel? > Check one’s own behavior to not miss the value of authentic listening.
- In your interactions, default to having other people share what they are thin king or feeling about the topic. > Counteract the default of “presentation.”
- Create ways in every work context for people to share. > Craft the situation around sharing.
Sarah Ross provided us the perfect example of two different bosses she distinctly remembers because how they each listened to her – one in a profound way and the other not so much. 😳
After the great discussion, we voted to take the rest of the time for a “sun day.” It was uncommonly beautiful in northern California and we all went outside to appreciate it.
