This week’s AP Studio was a smaller summer group, but full of great conversation and reflection.

    A handful of highlights…

    • Culture and Team Dynamics:
Teri shared a rich, practical account of how her team has developed a culture of psychological safety, openness, and mutual support. She described how small daily efforts—like being present, coaching newer staff, and maintaining an open-door policy—have made space for issues to be named and resolved. She credited a shift in team dynamics partially to the departure of some entrenched staff who hadn’t supported that environment, underscoring how one person can really impact culture.

    • Changing Culture from Any Role:
Charles sought input and ideas on how non-managers can influence culture. Teri emphasized the power of open communication with managers, while Brea and Sarah highlighted the role of relational influence—finding allies, modeling the change you want to see, and showing others what’s possible.

Brea spoke to the idea that even when leaders aren’t explicitly focused on culture, culture still emerges—often shaped by those willing to name gaps and model change. Sarah and Brea shared past experiences of deliberately “being different together” to shift team dynamics even without formal authority.

Other ways people can influence organizational culture that emerged, included:

      • Humor, especially when used to defuse tension and name issues playfully

      • Asking questions to open space for reflection

      • Sharing feedback candidly but kindly

      • Using reflective or disruptive tactics thoughtfully, especially when pushing against norms

    • Examples from Practice:
Brea shared a recent experience of bringing a frontline staff member into executive communications planning. Her story underscored the value of broadening perspective, normalizing feedback, and transparently explaining decisions—even when feedback isn’t fully adopted.
