Week 2 – Searching Your Future
This week in AP Studio, we stepped into the future—literally and figuratively. Chris kicked us off by sharing some internet findings like the United Nations Futures Lab and Arthur C. Clarke predicting brain surgery across continents. We spent some time doing our own exploratory online search into an aspect of futurism that interested us. The resulting conversation took us on a journey about what it means to imagine futures beyond the usual tech utopias and dystopian post-apocalyptic nightmares.
Here’s what surfaced:
Technology isn’t the whole story: While futurism often centers on gadgets and algorithms, folks were drawn to cultural, social, and human-centered futures. Think Solarpunk, Afrofuturism, queer futurism, and new currencies built on time off—not just money.
Inspiration from art and imagination: From Sun Ra’s jazz-infused visions to immersive exhibits like Project A Black Planet: The Art and Culture of Panafrica, we explored how artists, writers, and communities use creative mediums to envision new possibilities.
Rewriting the rules: Whether through post-collapse fiction, reimagined education systems, or rethinking how we live together, the group gravitated toward futures that question norms and prioritize care, connection, and creativity.
The future needs your curiosity: As Chris reminded us, futures thinking isn’t just a discipline—it’s an invitation to wander, wonder, and invent. Even ten minutes of open-ended exploration led us in wildly different (and fascinating) directions.
Next week, we’ll build on this momentum. If you have ideas for where we go from here, let us know!
