Week 3 – Wildcard
It was wildcard week and we had a fantastic conversation. After some personal updates and connecting we focused on some ideas and questions around organizational strategic planning.
A deep dive emerged around how nonprofits and other sectors approach long-term planning:
-
Athena posed a question about the distinction between strategic planning (typically 3–5 years out, often required/document-based) and strategic foresight (exploring multiple possible futures and shaping adaptive strategies).
-
Wayne shared that being in “reactive mode” has often made strategic work feel like a luxury.
-
Sarah and Chris reflected on how strategic foresight should feed into planning—especially as the political and funding landscape becomes more uncertain.
-
Our discussion emphasized the need for living, operationalized plans, not just funder-facing checkboxes.
-
The group touched on contingency planning, succession planning, and the value of acknowledging organizational vulnerabilities (like over reliance on key staff).
