Week 2 – Research on Confidence
You can watch the recoding of the session below:
We spent our time doing some secondary research – each of us exploring a specific angle or facet of confidence that we are curious about or want to better understand the depth and breadth of thinking that exists “out there”. This type of investigation can challenge our assumptions and help us dive into new perspectives.
Here’s some of the areas discussed…
Neuroscience of Confidence.
Chris dug into the science of confidence. Feeling confident involves complex brain activity, including the interplay of the prefrontal cortex, amygdala, and reward centers. Neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin also play a role in building self-trust and confidence.Confidence Theories and Frameworks.
Self efficacy is a person’s belief in their capacity to execute behaviors necessary to produce desired outcomes. Grace reflected on how self-efficacy and confidence played out for her and her peers in college, and how too often our school systems discourage true curiosity – another key ingredient in authentic confidence. The Intersection of Confidence and Optimism.
Caralee explored the relationship between optimism and confidence, which are closely linked. Optimism refers to the tendency to expect positive outcomes, while confidence refers to the faith in one’s abilities. When individuals are optimistic, they are more likely to be confident in their abilities, as they believe that they can achieve their goals. She also found the cliff notes to confidence 🤣 – check out this video, “The LAZY Person’s Guide to Ultimate CONFIDENCE.”The Impact of Body Image on Confidence.
In a world where professional success is often interwoven with personal perceptions, the role of body image and confidence cannot be understated. Sarah shared a bit about her own journey with body dysmorphia and things she’s done to improve her relationship with her body and thereby bolster her confidence.
