  • Week 3 – Go-to Principles and Methods for Navigating Uncertainty

We had a great session on Friday. We started out sharing bright spots from the week — Illinois and Chicago leadership reminding everyone that we protect vulnerable community members and law enforcement will not cooperate with federal authorities.

Wayne shared that Costco shareholders overwhelmingly rejected a move to discontinue DEI programs at the retailer. I hope these public acts of leadership continue to grow.

And Brea shared the tangible actions she has been engaged with that lift her spirit – a letter project with her kiddo and baking a damn cake! It made us all smile.

Here are some highlights from the session:

    • Chris kicked off with specific go-to principles and strategies when uncertainty is high. 1. Make something tangible. 2. Engage colleagues in a collaborative cycle. 3. Do just one – i.e. get feedback from one person (instead of launching a big survey.) 4. Host/gather with food and ambience to foster relaxed, authentic dialog.
    • Wayne reflected that the problems he faced 10 years ago as a staffer aren’t the same challenges his staff face today. He shared how valuable listening to the team is in recognizing new situations and making positive change.
    • Barbara emphasized that it doesn’t matter when a new work flow is launched in the org from the top down — if it doesn’t work for the staff, you need to be open to listening and changing. It empowers them and builds more trust.
    • Brea and Dan both talked about “being the creative one” in a traditional business environment and the risk of not being taken as seriously. Chris talked about the opportunity to acknowledge what colleagues might be thinking, “Oh, here come the sticky notes…” and share why their use is so valuable. In essence, we can coach the use of novel approaches along the way in an insightful way.
