Week 2 – Self assessment : How do I behave in uncertainty?
We may have been a small group on Friday, but we had BIG conversation! We focused on some self-reflection about our own feelings, behaviors, and actions in times of uncertainty.
- Uncertainty can be big or small. Like so many things, uncertainty falls on a spectrum. The scope and potential impact vary, and matter. Not knowing what your family prefers for dinner tonight is a far cry from not knowing if your family will even get to eat tonight.
- Do past experiences inform future behaviors? We wondered if people who have experienced high levels of uncertainties as children (poverty, violence, neglect) have increased or decreased levels of tolerance for uncertainty. Our guess based on personal experiences – it depends!
- Cumulative uncertainty is challenging. When uncertainty is high at work, those who also experience high levels of uncertainty at home (very often those with less positional power and wealth) can experience a compounding effect. It’s something leaders need to be watchful for and mindful of.
- We have agency, even in the midst of uncertainty. Everyone confronts uncertainty in their lives, it is part of the human condition. The good news is regardless of how far the outcome is from our control we almost always have agency in how we manage our response, and we can practice strategies that make it easier and more positive to be in uncertainty.
The replay is below. Conversation after the quiet reflection time is great!
