Week 3 – 5 Strategies to Understand & Select Ideas to Pursue
On Friday, we explored managing ideas once you have them. How do you pick which one’s to pursue? Chris put together a short deck summarizing five strategies.
But he emphasized that no matter the approach you take, the purpose should be as a catalyst to discuss the ideas. No idea is right or wrong. You’re not really selecting an idea, but a direction to shape into a valuable solution. So engage your colleagues to ask, “Why do you think this is a good idea?” “Why didn’t anyone vote for this?” “Which ones are ambitious?” “Which ones are easy?”
It’s the discussion within your organization’s context that will give you insight into how to move forward.
The five approaches are:
- Sort, cluster and name — then discuss the clusters and what’s not there
- Use 5-7 dots per person to vote for options that excite you
- Score them against criteria
- Chart them using helpful axes
- Make 3-5 alternative solutions, each made up of multiple ideas
