Week 2 – Strategies to have more, different & better ideas
We explored the nature of an idea and some strategies for improving our ideas. We got a little meta – but we also shared lots of great insights and epiphanies. Here’s just a small sampling of what we discussed…
- What are ideas? According to us they are: acts of imagination, expressions of creativity, a way to put forward a new approach, a response to “sometthing”, intentional, contextual, personal, and so much more!
- Can ideas be good, bad, or otherwise? Is it useful to label them as such? What would it look like to drop value judgements and just explore an idea?
- Nurturing ideas is hard work, especially in group settings. It takes time and patience – not all orgs invest in or cultivate those elements.
- We are indoctrinated into “right thinking”, which can inhibit our ability to generate LOTS of ideas, preferring to only share the “correct” idea.
- While constraints can feel limiting in ideation, forcing constraints in different stages of brainstorming can also be a tool to think differently.
- Don’t underestimate the power of subconscious work in idea generation – stepping away to do the dishes, take a walk, or something else mundane can activate your intuition.
